Football Training Drill to help players understand how to create space
This is a football coaching drill to coach players on how to create space. The ball is passed quickly and accurately between the players within the square. Players look to make timed runs, outside of the square to receive a pass. Encourage more than one player to make a run, as in a game players will sometimes need to create space not just for themselves, but for others. After receiving the ball outside the square, the ball is played immediately back into the square to a supporting player and the practice is repeated. To progress, add a second and third ball.
Football coaches should focus on ensuring players time their runs to receive passes outside of the square: players making the runs outside the square should look to communicate with the player passing, both verbally and with hand gestures: players passing the ball should be accurate with their passing and the passes will need to be well timed and weighted: the player receiving the ball outside the square will need immediate support inside the square to pass the ball back into: the practice is then repeated, pass inside the square, pass outside the square, encouraging players to make runs, both inside and outside the square to find and create space.
