The World Cup has highlighted the difficulty of refereeing at the highest level and the problems that players can cause for referees with their poor sportsmanship and bad behaviour.

Where does English Football go from here? England’s poor performance at the World Cup, compared with Spain and Germany’s performances have posed a whole host of serious questions for the game in England.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Spain where the best team in the World Cup, by a country mile. Their brand of pass and move football, is not only a joy to watch, but gains results. It was amazing how many times in the second half of matches, Spain played better and also scored the goal that ultimately won the match. Co – incidence? Or because the opposition worked so hard defending, chasing the ball, that they got tired, mentally and physically and Spain got more and more on top, created holes and exploited them with goals.

Imagine if Howard Webb had followed the letter of the law and sent off Nigel De Long and Mark van Bommel, in the final of the World Cup on Sunday, as arguably he should have done according to the letter of the law.
