Counter Attacking in the Modern Game
The Germans caught England out twice on the counter attack. This may have been in their game plan from half time onwards as they knew England would be pushing for an equaliser. In the modern game it is common for teams to plan and prepare before a game to let the opposition have the ball, by doing this they will stay organised defensively, be patient, drop off and wait for the opposition to force the play, take risks and push players forward. As the opposition is progressing up the pitch they will utilise the space available, make the pitch as big as possible and play long range passes with speed and precision and get forward runners beyond the ball and into space.
