There are three areas of practical coaching that a candidate must understand and practice. These being:
- Functional Practice
- Phase of Play (POP)
- Small Sided Games
Before coaching any of the above practices, a football coach will need to understand the following:

Which will include developing their knowledge and understanding of:

- Deny, Deflect, Delay and Defend
- Pressure, Cover and Balance

Principles of attacking play:
- Movement to create and exploit space as individuals and as a team
- Creative play
- Creating Overloads
- Switching the point of the attack
- Attacking from Crosses
- Crossing
- Attacking Areas
- Finishing
- Shooting
- Long Range Shooting
- Close Range Shooting
- Wide Flank Play
