The Worst in Football – Vinnie Jones – Booked within 5 seconds
Manchester City v Sheffield United. Division one. Maine Road. January 1991
These days, Vinnie Jones is better known as an “ A” list Hollywood actor. But, back in the 1980s and 90s Vinnie was a very effective midfield enforcer who can also play a bit.
Inevitably whoever he played against, Vinnie would like to leave his mark. On this particular occasion he managed a late and dangerous tackle within five seconds of the kick-off on Manchester city player manager Peter Reid. From the kick-off, the ball was played back to Peter Reid and Vinnie was like a greyhound out of the traps managing to clatter Reidy just after he played the ball forward. Referee, David Ellery found himself whistling for the kick-off and within five seconds whistling for a foul by Vinnie resulting in a yellow card, one of the quickest in history.
Shortly after half-time, he repeated a similar offence on the same player and received the inevitable red card.
